Do you know why March 20th is such a special day? It's The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day!!
In honour of the special picture book that has educated children for decades, and one of Eric Carle's most beloved characters, March 20th commemorates the story of a hungry caterpillar that eats a variety of foods before turning into a butterfly.
To celebrate the day this year we shared our Very Hungry Caterpillar Tableware Range with some friends of Smiffys, so they could enjoy the day with a Very Hungry Caterpillar themed tea party!
It looked like so much fun we decided to share some tips so that you can host your own event!
Food
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is all about their food, so it's only natural that snacks at your party must be like the food in the story. Salami sandwiches, Swiss cheese crackers and sausage rolls can be displayed across a table with our very hungry caterpillar plates and napkins.
For dessert, why not serve sliced apples, pears, plums, strawberries, watermelon and oranges in paper bowls. But for those with a sweet tooth, chocolate cake, cupcakes, ice cream and lollipops are always a tea party favourites!
Decorating
Whether your hosting your tea party outside or indoors, it's a great idea to set the theme with some balloons and this colourful party bunting featuring Erics Carl's illustrations.
Now you just need to lay the table. Start the decorations with a light green tablecloth and add plates, napkins and cups. Hint: a paper tableware range will be your best friend if you are hosting more than a few people... because no washing up!
Games
What’s a tea party without a game? One of our favourite games here at Smiffys is a colouring in competition! Luckily, the people at the Very Hungry Caterpillar created a colouring in template. Hand it to your guests with only different coloured pencils and the winner is the guest who colours in the neatest.
There are loads more fun activities and downloads available on the Eric Carl website if you're looking to keep young ones entertained for a while!
